Our Vision

The Vision of the Association is to create opportunities for old students (alumni) to be informed, remain connected and use their resources to give back to the school, and our community. This will serve as an investment towards quality education, growth, empowerment and development of the current students.

Our Mission

  • To foster, maintain and support a mutually beneficial relationship between alumni and the school
  • To provide a platform for exchanging ideas and vision with the school authorities
  • To encourage and educate members about support for educational projects, the community, and the social/moral needs of both the student body and staff members
  • To inculcate in the members the need to project a good image of themselves and that of the school by not just reciting the school motto but LIVING IT. Our school motto “Each for all and all for God” simply teaches us to be selfless
  • To organize and participate in social events that promote bonding relations amongst members of the association, display a united front and show solidarity among members
  • To seek and promote networking and the welfare of its members.

Support Our Cause

Please help support our cause by giving a donation in an amount of your choice. We are a non-profit organization with 501(c)(3) status and any donations made to us can be deducted under the IRC Section 170. Your generosity would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your consideration and looking forward to hearing from you.

Our organization is made up of the School alumni in the United States and Canada that were privileged to have had the opportunity to be educated at the School. Our objective is to raise funds to help with selected projects in the School and to provide competitive learning opportunities for the young ladies that are currently attending the School.

For the 2015-2016 academic year, we were able to provide a full-year scholarship, sponsoring one student on a need-basis. This student came from an underprivileged family. She had lost her immediate care; her mother and grandmother. For the 2016-2017 academic year, we extended the program and raised funds to provide full-year scholarships of $500 each for eleven students (three on a need-basis and eight on a merit basis for high performing students).

In collaboration with the Head of the English Department, a Book Club was formed and we have purchased 100 books by African authors for the Book Club. We also run a book drive and collected books and school supplies enough to fill two large boxes (26 X 26 inch), which was presented to the school in February 2017. These books will be in the School’s library for the students to have access to; with the ultimate goal of helping to improve the students reading, grammar and writing skills.

In the past, we have provided water tanks to supply water to the School. We have also sought professional services to conduct feasibility studies to determine the viability of having a constant supply of clean running water to alleviate the challenges faced by the students. We are now embarking on building more efficient restroom facilities in the Administration block for the students to use during class sessions. This project will provide ten stalls and four sinks with water tanks to supply water. If you are interested in supporting us for this project, click here to our gofundme page.

Our goal is to help make a difference to the current students and provide them with an environment that will promote learning with enthusiasm and passion, granting them the opportunities that some of us benefited from the Sisters of the Order of the Holy Paraclete (“OHP”). St Monica, mother of St Augustine, was the first African woman to be canonized as a saint and so when the Sisters of OHP came to Ghana from Whitby, North Yorkshire to set up an educational institution for girls, they named the institution after her, which is our School.

History of The School

St Monica, mother of St Augustine, was the first African woman to be canonised as a saint. It is fitting therefore, that when the Sisters of the Order of the Holy Paraclete (OHP) came to Ghana from Whitby, North Yorkshire, to set up an educational institution for girls, they named it after her.

St Monica’s School in Cape Coast, the first of the seven institutions that the OHP set up, was founded in 1926, as an elementary school for girls. Four little boys were introduced as part of a pilot project, but a few years later the Sisters decided to educate girls only.

In 1935, the Sisters acquired a site on the outskirts of Mampong, in the Ashanti region, and founded another St Monica’s elementary school. A year later, St Monica’s Teacher Training College was opened to provide career opportunities for girls, especially those from the St Monica schools in Cape Coast and Mampong. Today, the Teacher Training College’s curriculum has been expanded to include specialist teacher training courses in Textile Design, Art, Business Studies, Science and Home Economics.

In 1937, Richard Aglionby, Bishop of Accra, gave the Sisters a site along the High Street in Accra to build another elementary school for girls, to complement a boys’ school further down the High Street. Both schools were named after their founder – Bishop Aglionby -Bishop’s Girls’ School and Bishop’s Boys’ School. Shortly after, St Monica’s Secondary School with a Sixth form was established on the Mampong campus. Initially they shared facilities with the Teacher Training College, but from 1946, they each had their own premises and Principals.

In 1948, Sr. Miriam, a trained nurse/midwife began some basic nursing training courses in Mampong and the surrounding villages. It was so successful that in 1954, St Margaret’s Maternity Hospital and Training School were built. They were also meant to provide careers in nursing and midwifery for alumni of the OHP schools and other young women in Ghana.

In 1974, the Sisters founded the Mampong Babies Home, to provide care and shelter for orphaned babies, many of whom were born at St Margaret’s. The Babies Home also run a Nursery Nurse Training course. In 1976, the Sisters wound up their activities in southern Ghana and moved to Bolgatanga in the Upper East region where they established a vocational school for young boys and girls.

Many families in Ghana have benefited from the excellent education and career opportunities offered by the OHP schools. We count among our alumni, the late Dr. J.W.S. De-Graft Johnson, vice-President of the 4th Republic of Ghana (one of the four young boys educated at St Monica’s Cape Coast), numerous doctors, nurses, teachers, accountants, civil servants, judges, lawyers, Cabinet Ministers, businesswomen, house-wives and many more in every strata of society in Ghana and abroad.

Wherever we may be found, the alumni of the St Monica schools are united under one name and motto: “Each for all and all for God”.

Founding Of The U.S. Association

The association was birthed by a few ladies from the ‘85 year group. They had a cookout, and decided to form an association and at that point they reached out to me. My cousin, who was also an Alumnus, contacted me and asked me to join their conference call that evening. I was the only senior that time on the call.

I followed up by meeting Nyarko Badu at her church, since I did not know any of the participants in the group and her church was very close to where I live. We started reaching out to other Alumni ladies whose phone numbers were given to me. We were able to get in touch with a few and decided on a cookout at Dorice Enchill's house to make it official. By God’s Grace, it was a success!

This started in June 2011 and we were able to raise funds and purchased two water tanks for the school. Our goal at that time was to grow our membership. Despite the fact that we had a lot of names and addresses, most of the members were not joining the conference calls.

We've had 3 reunion and fund raising events in the past and this is the fourth year. We've formed an alliance with St Louis, Opoku Ware, Prempeh College and recently Yaa Asantewaa Secondary Schools. They will all be representing their schools at the event.

Senora Aye, wasn't an executive then, but she has been very instrumental within this organization, actively participating and coordinating each year’s event.

A word to all, you don't have to be an executive to lend a helping hand to this organization, bring your skills and expertise to the table to enable us to help the current students. God bless you All, Ladies!!!
